Happy Birthday, St Lawrence!(Free For All: Christmas 2008 Issue) A real bonus of our 75th anniversary celebrations is that lots of people came to St Lawrence who had never crossed the threshold before.
And everyone seemed to have a good time. The Parish cricket match might have been a wash out because of the rain, but the St Lawrence Players’ performance of “75 Glorious Years” gave rise to mirth and nostalgia. The church was again beautifully transformed for the Flower Festival. Who would have thought that what appears to be a building dedicated to one purpose could be put so effectively to so many different uses? And just to maintain the tradition of the last seventy five years, we did have a few church services as well.

Whether it was families from all over the parish who came to our free Family Fun Day, music lovers from far and wide revelling in the virtuosity of the international organist Carlo Curley, the choristers from nearby parishes singing at the Deanery Choirs’ Festival, friends dancing in the candlelit church transformed into a ball room for the evening, or strangers seeking peace in the church, everyone was welcome.
And now, in the words of our Parish Prayer for the anniversary year, we “look forward in hope” to realising our plans for dramatically changing the front entrance to the church to make it more open, welcoming and accessible to everyone; redesigning the children’s area in the church for quiet play during services, and planting 75 (or more!) trees across the parish.
